Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) plans to install a navigational system which uses augmented reality (AR) on 21 VLCC tankers.
Futuristic navigational system was developed jointly with Furuno Electric and MOL Techno-Trade and tested on a Ro-Ro vessel Beluga Ace and tanker VLCC Suzukasan in 2008.
This system is reported to display information about other vessels sailing on scheduled route, adjacent sea areas and other ocean conditions.
Information displayed on tablets and screens includes information from AIS and radars with video images in real time from the bridge camera. It works in cooperation with ECDIS FMD3300 of Furuno Electric company. The system provides a visual support of crewmembers during their monitoring and ship operations with the use of AR technology to superimpose video images in real time and information about a voyage.
According to the MOL representatives, a new technology will play a key role in the realization of autonomous vessels in future.
